GECOM and the opposition differ on the time-line for Local Government Elections

shot0001A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is not buying into GECOM’s position that the Commission would not be ready for Local Government elections within six months.

The party at its weekly press conference said that GECOM should have been in a state of preparedness for a while now since efforts to have the elections were always on the cards.

APNU Executive Member Basil Williams said the Commission would simply have to make a few adjustments based on the recently passed amendments to the Local Government Bills.

These Bills are the Fiscal Transfer Bill, the Municipal and District Council (Amendment) Bill, the Local Government (Amendment) Bill and the Local Government Commission Bill.

APNU Local Government Campaign Director, Winston Felix said that GECOM should have been following the reform process in order to move ahead with the long overdue Local Government elections.

It was only Wednesday that the four Local Government election Bills, after returning to the House form a Special Select Committee, were read for the second time and passed in the National Assembly.
