ABC Countries signal support to assist Guyana prepare for Local Oovernment elections.
Ambassador Devine speaking at his farewell reception at his residence said that Local Government elections are an important component of governance since it encourages the communities to have an active say in their own development.
Ambassador Devine added that Local Government institutions bring Government closer to the people, fostering greater inclusion, civic responsibility, empowerment and participation.
Meanwhile, United States Ambassador Brent Hardt said that the US Government stands ready to assist Guyana prepare for those elections.
He said the USAID office will coordinate a public education campaign so that the public can be sensitized about what exactly is Local Government and its role in a developing democracy like Guyana’s.
Ambassador Hardt reminded that all three parties have articulated their commitments to have Local Government elections.
Earlier in a joint letter, Ambassador Hardt and Devine, along with the British High Commissioner Andrew Ayre and the Head of the European Delegation to Guyana Ambassador Robert Kopecky, have all indicated that 2013 should be a watershed moment for the people of Guyana in that it should be a year Guyanese can once again democratically elect their Local Government representatives.
