Grand celebration planned to mark 250th anniversary of the Berbice Uprising
Much happening in New Amsterdam for the observance of 250 years since the Berbice Slave rebellion, which took place at Plantation Magdalenenberg . The commemorative activities are organized by Council of Friends of New Amsterdam, an organization geared towards developing New Amsterdam with support from other agencies within and outside of the community and region. The activities were opened by President Ramotar on July 28 in New Amsterdam. The role of youths was also discussed by the organizers who disclosed that the youth of New Amsterdam will be involved in several of the planned activities.
Another aspect of the activities to highlight the 1763 rebellion is the stage play Berbice Rebellion by Ras Leon Saul. Saul said he has modified the play into a musical one this year and it is expected to sensitize the youths about that important period in Guyana’s history.
The remaining activities for the remembrance will also include a Gala, a fun-day as well as exhibitions in New Amsterdam. The activities run until August 11.
