Police called in to protect not so favoured Town Clerk after stand off with vendors

shot0019City Mayor Hamilton Green was rendered powerless after he attempted to meet with protesting vendors in the Council’s chamber. Members of the City Constabulary were, however, having none of it and told the Mayor that they were given instructions not to allow any of the vendors in the compound.

The Mayor then made several attempts to get clarity on the issue, but there was no let up by the some members of the Constabulary.

The vendors have tormented the acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba over the past two days, calling for her removal from office. This was just hours after the Local Government Ministry has thrown their support behind Sooba, who they feel is doing a good job and is ruffling feathers at City Hall.

At a press briefing on Tuesday Local Government Minister Ganga Persaud went after the City Mayor Hamilton Green calling his action unfortunate. Persaud said that he is surprised that the Mayor would have reduced himself to becoming an obstacle, while Minister Whittaker said that the situation at City Hall is very frightening.

Whittaker said that the current Town Clerk since assumption to office has been making efforts to rake in revenues and trying to exercise strict expenditure measures, but the councilors are saying that Sooba was imposed on the council, she is unfit for the job, disrespectful and rude.
