Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes tenders resignation as Chairman of the Alliance For Change Party

shot0011In a statement released this Afternoon AFC Chairman Nigel Hughes said that he has handed in his resignation as Party Chairman.

The decision was made because of what Hughes sees as a clear attempt to tarnish the name of the AFC. It all has to do with Hughes’ role as Secretary of Amaila Falls Inc; the Company established in 2009 to manage the Amaila falls Hydrpower Project which is now the subject of a contentious debate in and out of Guyana’s Parliament.

Hughes said his appointment has been a matter of public record since the incorporation of Amaila Hydropower INC.

Hughes also said that he immediately disclosed his association with Amaila Hydropwer Inc to the AFC as soon as the company became of public interest, and asked the AFC to be recused from participating in their deliberations on the matter.

The Attorney  said that the provision of this public information by a prominent chartered accountant  to the Kaieteur News at this time could only have been for the purpose of  suggesting that he has been advancing the cause of his clients in the deliberations by the AFC on the Amaila issue. He said this is a position he rejects out of hand. Hughes said he has always acted professionally and disclosed to the party his relationship with the Client, as the client has been aware of his position in the party.

Just recently, Hughes’ wife Cathy, who is also an AFC member of Parliament, has said that any dealings with the companies associated with the Amaila PRoject by her were of a strictly professional nature.
