Natural Resources Ministry looks to enforce stricter enforcement of mining regulations

shot0003The Natural Resources Ministry is one of the policing agencies in the expanding mining sector and is looking at stricter enforcement of  the  mining regulations, but will also be working in the area of training and awareness.

Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud said safety should be the number one priority for persons who are plying their trade in the mining sector.

His comments were in reaction to remarks made by veteran trade unionist Lincoln Lewis that the policing agencies, the Ministries of Labour and Natural Resources and Environment are not doing enough to meet the challenges that confront the industry.

Lewis said there appeares to be a trend in this country where foreign companies are prepared to disregard the labour laws and time honoured principles and do as they like. Persaud said that is far from the truth.

The union leader is of the view that if safety measures are enforced some of the accidents can be avoided.
