25-year-old female American student sentenced to four years in prison for drug trafficking – 5th Jul 2013

brianna ashley rodneyAfter being intercepted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport a 25-year-old female American student was today sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay a 30 thousand dollar fine.

Briana Ashley Rodney pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry.

On Wednesday afternoon the woman was arrested after 4.1 kilogrammes of cocaine packaged off in six packets were found in a false bottom of her suitcase.

She was an outgoing passenger on a Caribbean Airlines flight bound for New York. The discovery of the illicit substance was found by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) agents.

But Rodney is not the only one who was charged in connection with the recent bust at the airport.

Andre Gustave of Kitty was also arrested and charged after the law enforcement agents linked him to Rodney. The agents are contending that Gustave is the alleged mastermind behind the drug run.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge that was also read to him today. He will make his next court appearance on July 15.
