Local cricket fans eagerly look forward to the return of International cricket – 28th Jun 2013

shot0009Cricket: Some local fans say they are eagerly looking forward to the return of international cricket, after almost two years, on home soil.

Cricket was suspended from Guyana following an impasse between the Guyana Government and the GCB.

On Thursday, the WICB announced the schedule for the WI vs Pakistan Series, starting on July 14th. Guyana will host the first two ODIs.

The national under 17 cricket team will depart Guyana on Saturday for the WICB under 17 tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.  Coach Gavin Ned said he’s confident that his players will do Guyana proud.

Guyana opens its campaign against the Windward Islands on Monday. Jamaica is the defending champion in the tournament.

Football: After a short delay due to the inclement weather; play in the Guyana Football Association Banks Player’s Cup Football Tournament will resume this Sunday with a triple header. The action starts in the afternoon with Beacon playing Northern Ranger, then the city’s top team Alpha United tackles Black Pearl. The other fixture will see Pele and GDF closing off the night’s encounter. The games will be played at the GFC ground.
