Relatives of Linden unrest victims receive compensation awarded by Commission of Inquiry – 26th Jun 2013
The families of the victims of the Linden unrest today signed to accept the compensation offered by the Government. The incident happened last year where three persons lost their lives. But the families intend to go down the legal road since they believe the settlement was inadequate.
The payment was based on the recommendations of the Linden Commission of Inquiry to pay off relatives of persons who were killed, injured or had their properties damaged during the month long protest.
Region 10 Chairman Sharma Solomon said the families of the victims are seeking the assistance of the Regional Democratic Council to take the matter further to get a better settlement.
Solomon said the payoff cannot compensate for the victims contribution to their families and community.
It was recommended by the Linden Commission of Inquiry that the families of Allan Lewis and Shemroy Boyea receive compensation to the tune of 3 million dollars each, while 2 million dollars was allotted to Ron Somerset’s family.
