SBDF credited with creating thousands of jobs – 24th Jun 2013

shot0008Over 15000 jobs have been created since the establishment of the Small Business Development Financing Fund, ten years ago, while for 2012 the Trust facilitated the creation of just over 2700 jobs.

This observation was from Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh who was a feature speaker at the 10th Annual General Meeting of the SBDF on Monday at the Pegasus hotel.

Dr. Singh said the role of Small and Medium Size Enterprises continue(s) to be a main engine for growth in developing countries such as Guyana.

The Minister said too that for any business it was critical for the Government to create an enabling environment, such as the maintenance of a stable exchange rate, having adequate foreign exchange reserves and a steady or reducing interest rate.

Also speaking at the forum was Hamley Case, who told stakeholders that in order to expand and develop their business, there needs to be some amount of innovative thinking.

Director Mohammed Ali, who delivered the Chairman’s Report, explained that the Trust so far has financed over 6000 loans valuing some 1.9 billion Guyana dollars.

Ali also said that as the Trust builds capacity in terms of strengthening its operations, it was important to seek new financing opportunities so that the entity can remain viable.
