Trade Union body calls for collective action to fight child labour in Guyana – 12th Jun 2013

child_labourA need for a collaborative action to combat child labour in Guyana is what some labour representatives believe may be the solution to the social problem.

Guyana Trades Union Congress President, Norris Witter says  that the issue of child labour should no longer be viewed in a state of denial.

Witter was speaking at an event child labour forum hosted by the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security.

Every year, on June 12, Guyana joins other countries to observe World Day Against Child Labour as a way to raise awareness of the plight of child labourers worldwide.

First lady Deolatchmee Ramotar views breaking the cycle of poverty and child labour necessary since the two social issues share a link.

Statistics on Guyana released in this year’s Human Development Report indicates that there is a 16 percent child labour rate among persons 5 to 14 years old.

According to international bodies like the United Nations, child labor is more rampant in many developing countries like Guyana.

The theme for World Day Against Child labour is “No to Child Labour in Domestic work”.
