Opposition APNU reject’s GPL proposed 26.7% increase – 11th Jun 2013
This adds to the statement by the Alliance For Change that any decision on increasing rates should be made by the Public Utilities Commission.
The main Opposition Party in a press statement said the APNU will stand by all Guyanese in their resolve not to pay one cent more to the power company.
Last Saturday GPL announced that the company intends to increase the electricity rates by as much as 26.7 percent.
GPL has attributed the increase to rising fuel prices and the recent budget cuts by the National Assembly.
The Opposition party is of the opinion that there is a conspiracy between the current administration and the Board and Management of GPL as an attempt to punish citizens by linking the proposed rate increase with the 2013 Budget cuts.
The party stated that GPL continues to under perform with no improvement in services and no significant attempt to control line loss, while daily black-outs continue to be a way of life. APNU says the company has admitted to losing more than 31 percent of the power that it generates.
APNU has now issued a call for the removal of the entire board of GPL and total managerial overhaul in what the party views as a mismanaged corporation.
