Pillion rider Killed in a Mandela Avenue Accident – 7th Jun 2013
22-year-old Tavil Gilbert was the pillion rider of a motorcycle, which collided with a car on Mandela Avenue just at the corner of Pineapple Street.
Eyewitnesses are reporting that after colliding with the car, the motorcycle catapulted in the air and landed at the side of this drain. Gilbert reportedly hit his head on a rock before he ended up in the drain. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Upon hearing news of the accident his parents and other relatives rushed to the hospital hoping for good news, but hope quickly faded when the doctors told them that the young man was having problems breathing. He had suffered injuries to his head and other parts of his body.
His father Sampson then explained to the media what he was told about the accident.
The driver of the car is in Police custody assisting them with their investigations.
The Police Traffic Department and other concerned groups have been appealing to road users to be more careful on the roads.
