Guyana Power & Light company to introduce smart metering in Guyana – 7th Jun 2013

shot0004Later this year as part of the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) loss reduction plan the company will introduce over 2000 smart meters in the Georgetown business area.

Divisional Director for GPL, Kumar Sharma said the new meter system would be the first of its kind and will be piloted in the Regent Street business area.

The soon to be rolled out project could see GPL monitoring customer’s consumption from its office and even allowing them to check their monthly charges online through GPL’s website.

This project is one of many that is part of the Sustainable Operations of the Energy Sector and Improved Quality of Service program which is financed by the Government through a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank and GPL.

International companies Itron and Tantalus were awarded the contracts to provide the smart meters and AMI infrastructure. GPL has recently put its electricity loss at 31 percent with more than half of that going to theft.
