West Indies open their Champions Trophy campaign against Pakistan – 5th Jun 2013
The West Indies open their Champions trophy campaign against Pakistan at the Oval in England on Thursday as they seek to lay hands on the trophy they lifted in 2004. The Windies are led by new one-day captain Dwayne Bravo who is coming off a very successful IPL season. The Windies go into the match with several of their batsmen getting among runs in the 2 warm up matches against Australia and Sri Lanka. They will be looking to their power hitters Gayle, Bravo and Pollard as well as Sarwan and Darren Bravo to continue their rich form and for their bowlers to strike early. The Pakistanis have been installed by many cricket commentators as the favourites to lift the trophy this year.
And exciting news; the WICB announced that Digicel has extended its sponsorship of the Caribbean side to 2016. The current sponsorship deal was set to end this year.
The coach of the Trinidad squad that sent Guyana packing out of the NACRA fifteens qualifiers Garry Mendes said that he had to develop a style of play to adapt to the physical strengths of his players.
Guyana and Trinidad played on Saturday last, and they were level on 4 points, after both beating Barbados and at stake was the opportunity to face USA South in the next few weeks.
Coach Mendes said he was relieved to see the backs of the Guyanese who knocked them out of the 2015 world cup qualifiers last year, but he was loud in praise for what he said was a great team spirit by the Guyanese.
The Round 3 match between the Trinidad Squad and USA South will be played in Trinidad later this month.
