Minister of Transport calls on the Maritime Association to work much harder – 29th May 2013
In the wake of the Cuyuni boat accident where three persons perished, Transport Minister Robeson Benn is calling on the Maritime Association to work much harder to raise the awareness and enforcement along with the Coast Guard and the Marine Police.
Benn was not too happy with what appears to be the frequent loss of lives on the waterways. He said the loss of lives as a result of those boat mishaps has tremendous impact not only on the families involved, but the wider economy.
While the administration does not have the capacity to Police the river, Minister Benn said all stakeholders have to work together.
He said the Maritime Association has instituted charges against errant boat captains and cancelled boat licenses of those who are not complying with the necessary safety requirements.
Prior to last weekend’s mishap, 10 persons lost their lives when two boats collided in the Mazaruni River, several months ago.
