Investigations continue into deadly boat accident on the Cuyuni River – 28th May 2013

shot0003The search continues for the last of four persons who went missing, following a boat mishap in the Cuyuni River over the weekend.

A source told this Newscast that three persons were rescued, three perished and one missing. Those dead have been identified as Clive Welcome, Junior Bandoo and William Patoir. This Newscast understands that Shawn Robinson is the fourth person missing.

According to unconfirmed reports, the boat encountered engine problems and subsequently cut out on the river. It is unclear if the passengers were wearing life jackets, one of the requirements of the maritime association.

The Maritime Administration has since launched an investigation into the accident. This latest accident comes months after so called safety measures were put in place by the Maritime Administration after 10 persons perished when two boats collided in the Mazaruni River.

What is worrying, is if the operators and passengers are complying with those measures. However, the Administration does not have the capacity to Police the river.
