Merriman’s Funeral home counts losses after Arson attack – 23rd May 2013
Police investigators and staff of the Merriman’s Funeral home were left shaken this morning after arsonists set on fire, the doors of the Chapel and completely destroyed two of the hearses parked in the garage.
While the reason for the attack is still unclear, Supervisor Yvonne Berry deemed the assault as an attempt in her opinion to put the funeral home out of business. The damages are said to be in the millions.
The incident reportedly occurred around 1 this morning at the Lime and Bent Street location. Residents in the area told this Newscast that they heard an explosion and upon investigating, they saw fire emanating from the side of the building where the hearses were parked. Berry said the interior of the building was damaged and that will take a while to repair. She noted that the building and the vehicles are insured, but posited that this was a setback to the funeral home.
Berry said alternative arrangements are being made to have their dead buried. The owner of the funeral home is said to be out of the country.
