Alleged cop killer, Shaka Chase, makes his first court appearance – 20th May 2013
Under heavy security and handcuffs, the suspect was brought to court with tears in his eyes professing his innocence of the crime.
The suspect Shaka Chase was not required to plea to the indictable charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry.
When asked whether the DPP had offered advice in the matter, the Police Prosecutor told the court that “there was no indication of DPP advice”.
Chase was remanded to prison until Thursday when the DPP is expected to submit her report.
As the suspect was escorted to the Police lockups relatives and friend went into an uproar against what they feel is an injustice against the young man. Family members are claiming that Chase was wrongfully charged for the Policeman’s murder. They are also alleging that he was beaten and tortured into making a confession. According to his sister, the Police also refused to take statements regarding the man’s whereabouts on that fateful night.
Joan Baveghems Member of Parliament said she is alarmed over the entire situation.
Before the charges were brought against the suspect, family members were protesting in front of the Police Headquarters at Eve Leary.
At Eve Leary, the relatives were calling on the Police to do a thorough investigation into the April 27th death of the Policeman.
