Three charged in beating to death of a gold miner – 15th May 2013
Three men were today arraigned in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for the murder of Sophia gold miner John Mc Pherson. The charges come more than a month after the man met his brutal end in Oku Backdam, Cuyuni in region 7.
According to reports the miner was beaten to death allegedly for stealing a ‘mat’, which collects gold during the search for the precious metal. Two other men were also beaten for stealing the mat.
Outside of the courthouse today Mc Pherson’s outraged parents and other family members expressed disappointment at the long delay before charges were filed.
They are also alleging that from an eyewitness account eight persons were alleged to have been involved in the beating incident.
Mc Pherson was pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica Hospital. Barbara James his told this newscast that the manner in which her son met his death leaves many unanswered questions. She vowed to take all the necessary course of action to ensure those who are responsible are brought to justice.
A number of miners have been murdered in recent times in the interior.
