Choo Wee Nam out sprints younger rivals to win 11-card Cycling race – 13th May 2013
Paul Choo Wee Nam rolled back the years to out-sprint several of his much younger rivals to win the feature event in the 11 card cycling race at the National Park on Saturday. He was followed by seasoned campaigners, Stephen Fernandes and Junior Niles. John Charles came in fourth and Alex Mendes and Warren McKay rounded out the top six.
Choo Wee Nam also copped 2 of the sprint prizes, Fernandes 3, Jude Bentley 2 and McKay 1. 49 riders faced the starter. Capitol News was on hand to talk to the winner after the race.
Banks DIH sponsored the race under its Powerade Brand. These races according to the organiser and National Coach, Hassan Mohammed are good preparation for the independence 3-stage coming up later this month. He said prepareations are going well.
Rugy Players are making use of every opporutnity to get themselces in shape for the Senior Caribbean 15s coming up in 5 days time when Guyana play Barbados. Some of the overseas-based players are already here and we spoke with Ronald Mayors, Dillon Downer about their expectations. Captain Ryan Gonsalves was also upbeat.
And the Woodpecker-sponsored Squash Tournament finished over the weekend and Shomari Wiltshire claiming both the U11/13 titles and coming second in the U15. Wiltshire is following a rich family sporting tradition in squash with his dad Garfield being a former Caribbean Champion and his sisters who also participated in the tournament. The most outstanding girl was Akeila Wiltshire and her brother Shomari was named the most outstanding boy. The most improved girl was Taylor Fernandes and for the boys, Alex Cheeks.
