City Hall’s Acting Town Clerk believes the Council should be more proactive in executing its duties – 9th May 2013

shot0003City Mayor Hamilton Greene and Town Clerk Carol Sooba is heading for a showdown over the removal of vendors from the streets.

The Town Clerk today at a press briefing at City Hall said enforcement is lacking in the Council.  She said Georgetown has become a very lawless city and she expects the City Constabulary to do their job.

Sooba said the City Engineer’s  Department; Solid Waste Department, the City Constabulary and other departments have not performed up to standard.

Sooba said she intends to exercise the full arm of the law to remove the vendors off the street. She even blamed the vendors for the garbage pile up in the city. The acting Town Clerk said she intends to enforce a recently passed High Court ruling by then Chief Justices Carl Singh and Madam Desiree Bernard.

City Mayor Hamilton Green was more sympathetic to the vendors. He said the Town Clerk lacks the understanding of the plight of the vendors. Mayor Green feels the vending issue is a complex one.

The City’s Chief citizen feels that proper planning for the city is need and he believes that the issue of vending must be looked at in the context of the redevelopment of Georgetown.
