GCCI will not call for the revocation of broadcast licenses issued by former President Jagdeo – 7th May 2013

shot0015The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) will not call for the revocation of broadcast licenses issued just days before former President Bharrat Jagdeo left office but is in favour of a re-examination of the process used.

With an abundance of information and debate on the issue in the press, both locally and internationally, Urling said that to call for a complete revocation could be extreme.

Several individuals and media houses have been up in  arms over   the manner in which the licences were issued with the matter reaching the High Court. Former Speaker of the National Assembly and former PPP Central Executive member Ralph Ramkarran in one of his online blogs has called for the licences to be withdrawn to ease the controversy.

This is a cop out by the GCCI that purports to be impartial but straddle both sides. Essentially, Urling wants to pacify the Civil Society and Media Houses but is scared/unwilling to go against the powers that be. Review will accomplish nothing, complete revocation is what is needed. Shame on GCCI!
