Trade Union leaders call for a halt in the hiring of contract workers – 2nd May 2013

unionUnity within the public service was the common cry among some trade union leaders who are also calling for a halt in the hiring of contract workers.

The unions are also calling for the salary imposition to stop and for a return of the collective bargaining agreement.

GPSU President Patrick Yarde said the replacement of public servants with contract employees must stop, while the President of the Guyana Teachers Union, Collin Bynoe said his union intends to confront the issue in the coming days.

The union leaders feel that in order to make the public sector more attractive, the Government needs to look at the salary scales and increase the income tax threshold.

For years the labour movement has not been speaking with one voice on the issues that are affecting workers across the country.
