Guyana Government insists that it had no insider deal with TVG – 24th Apr 2013
Education Minister, Priya Manickchand on Wednesday, brought out her experts to clear up what she said was inaccurate information circulating about the Learning Channel and how it operates. One of those experts is Dr. Sita Roth, who says she is very qualified to deal with the matters concerning the way the Learning Channel has been set up and its operations. Dr. Roth said that TVG which is at the moment, being paid 3.6 million dollars to transmit TLC programmes for NCERD, was the only option to the Ministry of Education to send the programmes out. This conclusion she said, came about after all the other options were explored.
Dr. Roth said that formal discussions were then entered into with TVG, leading to a 5-year deal.
Minister Manickchand was at pains to ask the media not to confuse the issue of the Learning Channel with that of the TV license scandal.
She said however, that the media will not force the Government to abandon the channel, since it is providing an invaluable service to the nation’s children.
Minister Manickchand said she believed TVG’s owner has been unjustly criticized and publicly thanked him for the service he has offered. She also believes that the media owe him an apology.
