Police Corporal caught on tape beating miners slapped with four counts of assault charges – 5th Apr 2013

police brutalityPolice Corporal, Nafaste Morris was today slapped with four counts of assault charges, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, before Principal Magistrate, Sueanna Lovell.

Morris was said to have committed the act on several persons, who it is alleged, were mining illegally in the region 9 community.

Morris pleaded not guilty to the charges and was placed on $20,000 bail on each count of the assault charges by the  Magistrate.

The charges were brought against the Policeman on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The DPP also recommend that charges be brought against the beating victims, who were said to be blocking the road in protest against their removal.

A woman and her two children were beaten, during a joint GGMC-Police raid, to clear the area of illegal miners. This was after several miners refused the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and law enforcement officers access to the roadway, leading to the mining camps.

The Police’s efforts to get statements from the victims were not successful.

The GGMC is also preparing to file charges against several miners who the commission said, were conducting illegal mining activities in the Marudi Mountain area in region 9.
