Fire of unknown origin damages Parfaite Harmonie Primary School – 26th Mar 2013

school fireDozens of students writing the grade six assessment exams had to be evacuated after a fire of unknown origin swept through the Parfaite Harmonie Primary School.

The exams were halted at the school on the West Bank Demerara following the fire. This newscast understands that none of the students were injured.

Eyewitnesses are reporting that the fire started from the western part of the building, which is used by nursery school students.
Exam Supervisor, Sonia Spellen, with the assistance of the invigilators, quickly evacuated the students.

Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam, told members of the media that provisions will be put in place to have the children re-sit the exams.

Just yesterday, Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, announced in his budget, over 28 billion dollars for the education sector. It is expected that heavy focus would be paid on improving the infrastructure of some of the school buildings.
