Home Affairs Minister Rohee to review status of implementation of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative – 21st Mar 2013

roheeAs Guyana prepares to reform its security sector, the Ministry of Home Affairs is in the process of reviewing the status of the implementation of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI).

The initiative is the latest pillar of a U.S. security strategy focused on citizen safety throughout the hemisphere.

Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, speaking ahead of Thursday’s discussions, said key stakeholders met in Trinidad late last year and assessed the implementation process.

The CBSI brings all members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Dominican Republic together to jointly collaborate on regional security with the United States as a partner.

US Ambassador to Guyana, Brent Hardt said, the funds that were committed have begun to come on stream.

Ambassador Hardt commended Guyana‘s efforts in reforming the security sector.

The United States has committed some 203 million US Dollars in funding for the first three years of the initiative.
