With the recent gastroenteritis outbreak in the North West community calming two lives already, residents here are hoping that something can be done to improve the quality of tap water.
When this newscast visited the community, garbage in the river and the constant traversing of boats on the water way, were just added concerns of the residents since it’s their only source of water.
Since the gastroenteritis outbreak, over 400 persons were affected, who are mainly children from the Port Kaituma community and other surrounding villages.
According to the Health Ministry, the water is highly contaminated since there is a high level of the Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria. E.coli bacteria are very common in the gastrointestinal tract, and part of the normal bacterial flora. However, humans can acquire the infection by consuming contaminated food or water.
