Water contamination blamed for gastroenteritis outbreak in the North West District – 13th Mar 2013
As the Ministry of Health shifts its focus on combating the outbreak of gastroenteritis in the North West district, samples taken from the river and GWI wells reveal, that the water is contaminated, mainly by human feces.
Health Minister Dr. Bheri Ramsarran said one of the problems is that the pit latrines are constructed too close to the rivers. He said however, there has been some positive responses from the residents, but he is hoping that it can be sustained.
So far three children have died following the outbreak and according to the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud, two of the children died from Gastroenteritis while the cause of death of the third child was complicated, since the child was suffering from other medical conditions.
The Ministry of Health is now looking at a multi-agency approach to bring some relief to the affected communities.
