Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary rice farmers at risk of getting their lands taken away due to debt – 12th Mar 2013
Opposition executive member Dr. Rupert Roopnarine is calling for an audit of the Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary Agricultural Development Association, following frequent complaints by farmers that the association is not doing anything for the farmers.
Some of the farmers are alleging that the MMA is taking away the land from poor farmers and giving it to rich farmers. They told the media that the MMA is not looking to assist the poor farmers.
Roopnarine and members of the APNU met the farmers and promised them that the partnership will do everything within its power to ensure that plans which are afoot to re-possess farm lands are halted.
The MMA has advertised for rice farmers in the Abary area to pay up outstanding rates or their lands will be repossessed. But farmers are saying that the MMA needs to work out a payment plan.
Some of the farmers owed the MMA as much as $500,000, but told the media that when attempts were made to make payment they were told that the land was already sold.
