Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee blames recent spate of robberies against Chinese Nationals on opposition – 11th Mar 2013
As the Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee continues to lay blame on the opposition for the recent spate of robberies against Chinese nationals, opposition leader David Granger said the Minister’s job is to make sure that citizens and businessmen are safe.
Rohee in a statement to the press said the recent upsurge in criminal attacks against Chinese businesses have coincided with a “politically inspired and orchestrated campaign by known opposition elements”.
Granger quickly rubbished those claims and said for years Chinese nationals have been victims of criminal attacks under the ruling party, even resulting in deaths.
Granger said his party is against any ethnic attacks on the Chinese nationals. He said his party’s recent involvement in the Marriott Hotel protest was confined to the Marriott site.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has noted over the past months a pattern of incidents where Chinese businesses were being targeted by criminal elements. However, in the majority of those cases, the Chinese nationals suffered physical injuries as a result of these criminal attacks.
