Opposition coalition APNU calls for an inquest into the shooting deaths of the three Linden protestors – 8th Mar 2013
The party said the Commission of Inquiry into the incident did not explicitly examine several critical elements regarding the shooting.
Shadow Minister for Legal Affairs, Basil Williams said, the report was luke-warm in relation to the liability of the Police.
The coalition is also questioning why the Commission did not out- rightly identify the particular individuals who did the shooting.
Regarding the compensation issue, party executive member, Rupert Roopnarine said, the awards ignored international norms.
He said the compensation package is a blatant disrespect with regard to the loss of lives and limbs.
The party is also examining the possibility of pushing for the establishment of a Board of Assessors charged with the review of the awards handed down by the Commission.
However, the Government on Thursday said, it is unlikely that they would increase the compensation recommended by the Commission.
The Commission recommended three million dollars each to the relatives of the two of the men killed and two million dollars to the estate of the teenager who was also killed.
