Speaker of the National Assembly bashed by President Ramotar at Babu John – 5th Mar 2013
The speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman was not spared a bashing from President Donald Ramotar during his Babu John address on the observance of the death anniversary of the ruling party’s founder leader Dr. Cheddi Jagan.
The President told the gathering that Trotman’s decision to withdraw the Rohee gag order was not done from the goodness of his heart. In fact, the President feels Trotman was forced to rescind his decision.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman, said he is satisfied that in permitting Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee to speak, he did what is constitutionally right against what may be politically correct.
His decision to allow Rohee to speak did not find found favour with the APNU. The partnership described the ruling as soft. But Trotman said he said he took an oath to uphold the constitution of Guyana and not to subvert it. But the President thinks otherwise.
The Speaker noted that having had the benefit of research, advice, legal opinion and considering the ruling of the Chief Justice, “ he thought he could not rightfully continue to keep a restraint”, on the Minister.
