Rice farmers finally get what is due to them from Mahaicony Rice Mills – 5th Mar 2013

riceRice farmers on the Corentyne and the Essequibo coasts could be smiling all the way to the bank.

This is why: Sea Rice Caribbean Guyana, a local rice shipping company has paid off over 2 million dollars in debt owed to the Guyana Government.

The Ministry of Agriculture had facilitated a loan to Mahaicony Rice Mill Limited which was to pay for paddy from the smaller farmers.
The company’s General Manager Douglas Chappels told the media today that the company has made arrangements to pay farmers for paddy owed by the now troubled Mahaicony Rice Mill Limited.

Chappels said this development is part of an agreement that was concluded between the Ministry of Agriculture, the Guyana Development Board and Sea Rice Caribbean Guyana.

With the new arrangement Sea Rice Caribbean Guyana will now have fifty per cent shares in the smaller rice mills.

Chappels said the company is hoping to start operating the mills starting this current crop.
