Workers of power company GPL down tools, demand an eight percent increase in salaries – 27th Feb 2013
Workers attached to the Guyana Power and Light disconnected their services today in protest over the company’s 1% increase across the board and failure to honour a collective bargaining agreement. The strike was called by NAACIE and the GPSU which represent the workers and the Unions have expressed their frustration with the seeming foot-dragging by the company on the issue.
The workers also expressed their displeasure over the entire development saying that GPL is not looking out for their best interest. The workers are preparing for the long-haul until their demands of the Union are met. The offices at Main Street were closed and the security guard was the only one in the compound.
GPL is saying that the industrial action will not severely affect their supply of power.
