Women and Gender Equality Commission to draw up a strategic 5-year plan – 26th Feb 2013
Mandated by the Constitution to be advocates for the protection of women’s rights, the Women and Gender Equality Commission is embarking on drafting a five-year Strategic Plan of Action, for its 2013-2018 cycle.
Chairperson of the Commission, Indranie Chandarpal, told the opening ceremony of a Stakeholder Validation Meeting that the last year has seen several actives that were geared specifically to empower women.
She said, with the new cycle ahead, getting feedback from key stakeholders was critical in the work of the commission.
Chandarpal said, the commission tried to cover all the regions but was unable to reach those in the hinterland. She explained that before the current cycle is completed, the commission will be reaching out to Hinterland Women.
UNDP’s Trevor Benn, who also addressed those gathered, pledged the UN support for women equality.
He said, Guyana continues to enjoy women equality, as compared to some other developing countries.
The five-year Strategic Plan of Action for 2013-2018 will take effect from May this year.
