The Finance Minister says he is “sincere” about budget talks with the opposition – 22nd Feb 2013
Faced with the ongoing criticism that the Government is ignoring stakeholders in the preparation of the budget, the Minister of Finance, Dr. AShni Singh today said, the proposals made by the opposition regarding the 2013 Budget are being seriously considered. There have been two meetings with the opposition thus far, and both opposition parties APNU and the AFC, have made written submissions of what they want in the budget. While, the Finance Minister says he is pleased with the tone of the discussions, he said he was disappointed with what the opposition has been saying.
And more on consultations, the Finance Minister said the budget is being prepared with the Government’s various sector strategies in mind. Those strategies were developed after consultations with every significant stakeholder, the Minister said.
While he said that the Government is looking for continuity in this year’s budget, Dr. Singh indicated that Guyanese can still expect “new” provisions in the budget, but he was silent on what those could be.
