Global Movement Project, ‘One Billion Rising’, aims at ending domestic violence – 15th Feb 2013
More women are losing their lives and coming under attack from their male counterparts but the solution to this growing problem may be simply to work with men to raise awareness and get to the root of the problem, according to First Lady, Deolatchmee Ramotar.
The First Lady was at the time speaking at the Global Movement Project, One Billion Rising, aimed at domestic violence in the Promenade Garden on Thursday.
Former First Lady Varshnie Singh, who delivered the feature address, also believes that men can be part of the solution.
On February 14 each year, men and women, countries across the globe, would take to the streets dancing in an attempt to increase awareness of the realities faced by women and girls as part of the One Billion Rising project. In Guyana it was no different.
According to reports by the United Nations, one out of three women on the planet will be beaten or raped in their lifetime which is over a billion women who will experience some type of gender-based violence.
