Stallholders seek compensation after Central Government bulldozed stalls to facilitate four-lane highway – 12th Feb 2013

shot0006This is how persons are now accessing the new Timeheri market; the facility has no water, electricity, no proper drainage and toilet facilities according to stallholders. Last Saturday the market which was located on the road side was bulldozed by Central Government to facilitate the four lane highway.

Now the stallholders are looking for some form of compensation to get back on their feet. Some stallholders told this Newscast that they lost thousands of dollars during the dismantling exercise.

The stallholders were given notice to move, but were reluctant since the necessary infrastructure was not put in place. Inside the new market area, construction was in full swing as the stallholders tried desperately to get back into business. They are firmly of the view that Central Government could have given them some more time to put their stalls in order.

Some stallholders told this Newscast that the market has been in existence for decades and they were given the necessary paper work to build permanent structures.
