Guyana National School of Theatre Arts and Drama opens – 31st Jan 2013
It took a few decades after a National Dance School was established in Guyana, for a Drama School to come on stage, so to speak. At a very small and simple Ceremony, suitably called “Opening Act”, at the National Cultural Centre on Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport unveiled the Logo and plans for the school to be known as the National School of Theatre Arts and Drama.
The Director of Drama, Collette Jones Chin, announced that the school will start classes on February 4th. Some of those students have already been acting so they will complete a second year program.
The Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, remarked that Guyana has had a long history of Theatre. A position underlined by Theatre Critic, Al Creighton, who noted that in the last few decades, The Theatre Guild of Guyana effectively has been the training ground for those involved in theatre.
The space at the National Cultural Centre would be used as the training venue for the students of the school.
