Guyana Government to establish a national minimum wage – 23rd Jan 2013
Apart from the established minimum wage of $50, 000 for public sector workers, the Government would periodically dictate what the minimum wage for certain categories of workers in the private sector should be, but now, everyone would be covered.
The decision to establish a national minimum wage followed discussions between the Government, workers’ unions and the private sector.
Following those discussions, Minister of Labour Dr. Nanda Gopaul, Tuesday sought the approval of the Cabinet to establish a national minimum wage.
A high level team of Government Ministers have been tasked with rolling out the initiative, including holding consultations so that all parties would buy into the initiative.
No deadline has been set for when the scheme would be put in place.
