GRA to go after traders with 14.8 million dollar scanner – 22nd Jan 2013
Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Commissioner General, Khurshid Sattaur, said, the agency will not spare any effort to collect what is due to the agency, especially when it comes to persons using the airport to ship commercial items into the country.
According to the GRA boss, the introduction of the suitcase scanner in the arrival section of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport will put GRA in a better position to detect persons misusing the system.
Sattaur said, once persons are found guilty of not declaring commercial items in their suitcase, they could face jail time of up to 3 years.
The Guyana Revenue Authority is hoping with the suitcase scanner, revenues collection will increase at the airport. The scanner will not only be able to identify commercial goods, but other items such as concealed weapons, and explosives and even narcotics.
The 14.8 Million dollar scanner was donated to the revenue authority through the support for competitiveness programme with the assistance of the Inter-American Development Bank.
