Speaker of the National Assembly justifies striking out amendments to motion at last sitting – 15th Jan 2013
Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman, says he may have averted a major confrontation by his withdrawal of what he described as scandalous amendments to a motion brought to the National Assembly. At last Thursday’s sitting of the National Assembly, the Clerk of the National Assembly included some amendments to a motion that called for an inquiry into a crime wave in Guyana . The Speaker believes that the amendments should never have been circulated because of the volatile nature of the information contained.
The Clerk of the National Assembly circulated the motion before the House, but the Speaker said that he expects that the Clerk would ensure that he is aware of any such information beforehand.
The Speaker also disclosed that he used the power vested in him as Speaker to amend the Opposition Leader’s Motion in terms of the time frame for scrutiny.
