Agriculture Minister Ramsammy hopes to meet projected sugar production target – 11th Jan 2013
Last year, the Sugar Industry showed some signs of improvement, but it was not all that sweet. The Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, is hoping for better weather to meet there projected target of 250,000 tons of sugar.
The Minister was speaking to reporters yesterday at Parliament. He said, the focus is to put more machinery to work in this New Year.
Last year, the Sugar Industry recorded just around 70% of their revised target of 240,000 tons of sugar. Ramsammy said that amount was achieved from 11 weeks of fair weather production.
Bad weather, low yields and an unstable work force were factors which contributed to the sugar company not achieving 300,000 tonnes, a figure which the sugar industry had announced at the beginning of 2011, that it was aiming to achieve.
