Firefighters save the Mash Secretariat building in Georgetown – 8th Jan 2013
The Guyana Fire Service is receiving high praise this evening for their quick response and their efforts to avoid a major disaster at the Mash Secretariat in Middle Street last night.
The origin of the fire is till to be determined. Today the police and fire services were back on the scene conducting their investigations. Staff members of the Secretariat and members of the sports commission were on hand to get a glimpse of the extent of the damage. Work was halted for the day to allow for the investigation. Initial reports from the Guyana Fire Service indicates that the fire might have started in an air-condition unit in the top flat of the Middle Street building.
An eyewitness who lives next door said he saw the fire in the early stages in the building with faint smoke coming out. He said he immediately called the Fire Service.
The fire was confined to an area that houses the Department of Sport and the President’s Youth Award.
