63-year-old woman remanded to prison after being charged with drug trafficking – 27th Dec 2012

A 63-year-old Corentyne woman, who lives in Canada, was remanded to prison this morning, after she was charged with drug trafficking. The woman Bhagwantie Seepaul of Toronto, Ontario, was busted at the Cheddi Jagan Airport on Sunday, as she prepared to board a Caribbean Airlines flight to Canada. The woman had the cocaine hidden in containers of curry powder and also hidden in a pack of custard powder.

Over 7 pounds of cocaine was found concealed in the products. The 63-year-old woman pleaded not guilty and told the court that the packets were given to her by a man named Alex, to deliver to someone in Canada. She claims, that she does not know the man or any other name for him other than Alex but she said, she met him at the Berbice Car park while in the city. The woman has been living in Canada for a number of years and should have been getting her citizenship there any time.

There have been a number of drug busts this year and cocaine has been found in just about everything from weave to soap powder to fresh produce.
