UOG Council formally announces choice for Vice Chancellor – 13th Dec 2012
Well the University of Guyana Council met the press to formally announce its choice of Vice Chancellor. UWI Professor, Dr. Jacob Opadeyi, is a Nigerian by birth, but is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago by virtue of Naturalisation.
Pro Chancellor, Dr. Prem Misir, and council members Gail Teixeira and Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, were at pains to stress that for once the issue of selection was not a contentious one.
The selection process was very different from what previously obtained with panels set up to screen the short-listed applicants, who then had to make oral presentations to the university community. The University ended months of searching for a new VC after Professor Lawrence Carrington indicated, that he no longer wanted the position. Carrington’s move had come amidst heavy turmoil at the university as members of the academic staff engaged in protest actions for improved working conditions. But Dr. Misir stressed, that the university is an old one with an even older structure and that changes will take time.
The new VC is expected to make a private visit before the end of December to UG and will then be enged by the University administration in January, with a view to finalizing his contract. The University is looking to have him installed by the end of February.
