Broadcasting Authority has been meeting, extends deadline – 21st Nov 2012
The Broadcasting Authority in the country will be advertising for a Chief Executive Officer who will in effect run the entity. The Chairperson of the Authority Member of Parliament, Ms. Bibi Shadeek, says, that while the Board appointed by the President has been meeting with existing broadcasters and receiving request for new services, the day to day administration of the authority will be done by the CEO.
The chairperson who is not enamored by what is passing for Television in Guyana, says it is failing. She wants to ensure that those who are on the air or will go on the air, will do so with a sense that the media also molds minds.
The Broadcasting Authority has met with all of the existing broadcasters in the industry except the National Communication Network and the Guyana Learning Channel, who did not turn up at the meetings with the Authority or ask someone to represent them.
The Guyana Government, prior to the establishment of the Authority, unilaterally allocated radio frequencies to a select group of entities. At least one is already on the air.
The Chairperson of the Authority says, even those who were on, prior to the establishment of the authority, will have to re-apply. And because of the need to fulfil all of the requirements, the authority has agreed to extend the deadline beyond the January 1st, next year date.
