Tradewind Tankers True Champions Tournament commences – 16th Nov 2012

The National Gymnasium is the venue for the Tradewind Tankers True Champions International Volleyball tournament. The activity which opens tonight will see teams from Brazil, Trinidad and Suriname take on 4 local clubs in what is expected to be closely fought encounters according to President of the Demerara Volleyball Association, Ian Wills.

President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation, Lennie Shuffler said, that the tournament which has been long in the making is a dream come through for the federation.

The Championships will also feature a goodwill series between the Junior teams of Brazil and Guyana. The two top teams will receive both cash and trophies for their efforts.

The West Indies head into the final day of the first test against Bangladesh 215 runs ahead with 4 wickets standing. Kieran Powell scored his second century of the match 110 and Darren Bravo made 76. Opener Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels have had sub-par performances in this test after Gayle was dismissed for nineteen and Samuels for 1 run. First innings double century make Shivnarine Chanderpaul is yet to bat dropped down the order for an unspecified ailment.

Powell now has the honour of being only the second West Indian Opening batsman to score hundreds in both innings of the same test. The other is WI Hall of Fame batting legend, Gordon Greenidge.

The Senior National Chess Championships is scheduled to begin on Saturday November 17th at the Ocean Spray Hotel, Kitty. National Senior Champion, Taffin Khan, will be defending his title against seven challengers.

The tournament is sponsored by the Dr.Chase line of products, distributed by GEDDES GRANT LTD.
